May 2017: concerts and a premiere
%19-%05-%2017, %ROn May 10th, Goldfield Ensemble gave a concert in the Lyons Concert Hall in York in honour of LeFanu's 70th birthday. Titled 'Invisible Cities and Imaginary Places', it included 'Songs without Words' (clarinet and string trio) and 'Invisible Cities' (clarinet quintet) and two Maconchy works. Solo violin pieces by Sadie Harrison were threaded through the programme, plus Murail and Sciarrino. A superbly played concert.
On May 16th, at the Ashmolean in Oxford, Cayenna Ponchione and OSJ gave the premiere of 'May Rain', which sets a poem by Kerry Hardie. The fine mezzo-soprano soloist was Charlotte Tetley. 'May Rain' was commissioned by Ponchione as part of her 'Water-Culture: Women's Work' song set.
